Men’s Health: What You Need To Be Doing As You Age

You might think that as we age as men, there isn’t much change. We might just get a little grayer and lose a little more hair. However, there are certain things that do happen to us men as we age. And knowing what does happen will certainly help you to take care of your health more. There are certain things that we should focus on for our health, depending on our age too. So I’m just going to share with you some things that we should be looking at, and should be looking to change, as we get older. We want to be at our best for as long as we can so that we can be the best we can be for our families.

Healthy Diet

There are no two ways about it, what we eat is going to impact our health and everything that we do. The food we fuel or body with can be good or bad, and mean plenty of energy, or a complete lack of energy. There is no better time to start a healthy eating regime than in your twenties and thirties. So look for some ways to eat better. It doesn’t mean you can never have something like pizza again, as all things should be in moderation. However, you can make your own pizza, or limit fast food to no more than once a week, for instance. Eat a balanced diet full of protein, fiber, grains, and fruits and vegetables, and you’ll have all of the energy that you need. Cooking from scratch is a good way to avoid eating too many processed foods, and will get you in the habit of cooking (which I think is pretty important with a growing family). So look for some things that you can change today.

Regular Exercise

Like with healthy eating, it is good to get in the habit of regular exercise. You don’t need to be working out in a gym or lifting weights to be exercising. It could be walking or doing something like yoga. But it all helps to control your weight, as well as improve the health of your insides. It can help you to relieve stress too, so it really is a no-brainer to exercise more. If you do have children and find it hard to fit in too much exercise, then get them to do it along with you. Kids love being outside, and they should be active as much as possible too. So be active and make the most of it and get outside and running around with your family.

Know Your Family History

Knowing your family history, in terms of healthy anyway, is really important. The reason being it can be an indicator of what could potentially happen to you as you age. So the younger you can find out, the better. Look for things like diabetes in the family, as well as things like heart disease. So if you have family members that are still around, it is a good idea to speak to them about things before it is too late. If any warning signs do come up, then being able to actively prevent against them is a great thing to do.

Have Regular Screening Tests

There are regular screening tests that women should have as they age. But do you know that there are regular screening tests for men to have too? If you don’t, then listen up, as you should be having these pretty regularly too. First of all, you can perform self-examinations for things like testicular cancer. This is pretty easy to do at home, just when you’re in the shower, for example. But it is the most common form of cancer for young men, so it is worth actively checking for any changes in that area. Other things can be dealt with by your doctor. You can have checks or screenings for your cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as your heart, circulation, and diabetes. If you’re in your twenties, then it is a good idea to get this kind of thing checked pretty regularly.

Check Hormones

Our hormones can naturally decrease as we get older. This is true for men and for women. But for men, we can get a decrease in testosterone as we age. This can affect your life in several ways, from physical strength to libido, and even how healthy you are feeling and how easily you get over illnesses. So it could be worth looking into getting a supplement to help you if you feel like you’re suffering in those areas mentioned. You could try a supplement like 1st Phorm testosterone booster or look for natural ways to keep your hormones in check, by reducing the amount of stress in your life, for example. Which leads nicely onto my next point.

Reduce The Stress In Your Life

In your forties and fifties, it is a time for most men to have a lot of success. Careers can be well underway, and many positions of authority might be held. But with all of that, there can be a certain element of stress and pressure from work and financial burdens. Not to mention stress from family situations too. However, stress is a known factor for things like cardiovascular disease, as it puts pressure on your cardiovascular system, and can raise things like your blood pressure. This can affect men at a younger age than women, which is why this is the time to be doing things about it. So look for something that you can use as an escape from stress. It might be exercise, it might be reading a book, or it might be time out to do cooking or do some DIY. But having something that is a release for you will make a big difference to your stress levels and overall health.

Keep Weight in Check

In the mid-life kind of ages, it can be a time when you have gained a few extra pounds in weight. But it is good to deal with it as soon as it comes up before anything gets worse. Being overweight can be a precursor to many other health problems, so it is best to nip it in the bud before it gets worse. You don’t want to end up with diabetes or heart disease if it could have been avoided through weighing less.

Don’t Forget Screening Tests

Like the screening tests when you’re younger, there are still important tests and screenings to have when you are older too. For instance, if you have a family history of things like diabetes, and you are inactive or overweight, then a screening would be a really good idea. Bowel cancer checks can be a good check as you age too, as that is mostly diagnosed when people are in their fifties. So if you ever notice changes, then it is important to speak to your doctor as soon as you can.

Use Your Mind

At this age, it is a good idea to do exercises that are going to help your mind and help you to stay alert. It sounds a bit harsh to say ‘use it or lose it,’ but it can be true as you get older. Finding something that is interesting and that you enjoy, like puzzles and games, is a really good idea. Getting social is a good idea too. Chatting with people regularly will keep you fresh and help to keep your mind on top of things.

Do Strength Training

If you are getting older, you might be thinking that strength training is one of the last things you should be doing. But keeping your strength up can help you in a lot of ways. Trips and falls are much less likely if you are strength training and keeping up your strength. So keep yourself as strong as you can, and you’ll feel the benefit. You’ll be able to look after yourself better, as well as keep fit and live longer. It is a good idea to speak to a trainer if you’re not too sure where to start, though. You don’t want to end up getting an injury when you’ve only just started.

One of the most important messages as we all age is to keep in touch with your doctor. Men are more likely to avoid seeing their doctor for an ailment, whether that be a physical ailment or even an issue with mental health. So the key message is not to put off seeing your doctor or getting help when you need it. Then you’ll be able to deal with anything major that comes your way. So follow these steps, get regular health checks and screenings, and you’ll be the healthiest that you can be.
