When you travel with young children, it can feel like herding cows sometimes. They can be quite chaotic, and there can be different things to think about. But it is completely possible to travel as a family. You just need a little more plan and care to make it happen. It is certainly more than just playing some kid’s songs in the care and making regular stops for the potty. So here are some top tips for family travel.
One of the worst things about travel with kids is if you feel rushed. When you are rushing around it can be chaotic and you don’t want to leave anything behind (or anyone)! So simply, all you need to do is to allow yourself plenty of time. When you allow yourself plenty of time to get to the airport or plenty of extra time for a road trip, it will be much more beneficial and less stressful. If you find that you don’t need all of the extra time, then you’ll just get to your destination a little early. Nothing wrong with that.
You don’t want to get to your destination and not have something vital that you need. If you know the area you are going to, you can always go to a store and get something. But if you are going abroad, or somewhere for the first time, then it can be difficult to know what to do if you forget something. So make sure that you pack wisely. Take all kid essentials like wipes and diapers. You don’t want to get caught short!
Make it a home away from home
When you can make the kids as comfortable as they would be normally, then it makes a difference to how cooperative they will. So take some of their normal toys with them. Take a storybook for bedtime, so they can still enjoy some of the same things that they would normally. If you’ve got a pet like a dog, then depending on where you’re going, could you take your pet along with you? Things like road trips would work best for this kind of thing, so maybe look into the best car seats for dogs if you don’t already have one. Then it can be an adventure for the whole family to enjoy. I find the kids tend to behave better when they have a few of the comforts of home.
If you are going to be flying, then you need to look into what is allowed on the plane. Are car seats extra or are they included in the price of the ticket? What are the restrictions on car seats going into the cabin? Checking all of this ahead of time will make the whole trip much easier. If you are going to be traveling by car, then will you be going on any toll roads? If you are, having some change with you is going to be a great help along the way.
